Native Land

(Note: This land acknowledgement references history that may be distressing to some.  Please read with care.)

For thousands of years, Indigenous communities stewarded these lands and waters.  Indigenous people and cultures in the Bay Area today have survived recent centuries of government-sanctioned violence, including policies of genocide, slavery, abduction, forced assimilation, and neglect.  We recognize that colonialism and its effects are still ongoing, and that healing/recovery is neither simple nor complete.

It is important to acknowledge that “San Francisco Bay Area” is a settler label that references the ancestral lands of many people, including the following: the Lisjan/Ohlone community (Chochenyo, Karkin, Ramaytush, Yokut, and Muwekma); the Graton Rancheria community (Coast Miwok and Southern Pomo); Kashaya, Patwin, and Mishewal Wappo communities; and the Bay Miwok community.
