Want to Post a Job? Read this first.
Below are best practices when posting a job. It is not the only list out there for equitable hiring practices, but it is a good place to start.
1.) Include the Salary Range and Benefits.
–> UPDATE: Starting January 1, 2023, employers with 15 or more employees MUST include a pay scale on job postings! See California’s Pay Transparency Act (SB-1162) for more.
No more of the cryptic, “Wage commensurate with experience” nonsense. Not including salary and benefits information in a job posting is an extremely discriminatory practice. Employers must be transparent in what they plan to pay their employees, and that pay must be commensurate with the responsibilities of the position.

2.) Check for prejudice in your requirements and wording.
Do your requirements have hints of racism? Able-ism? Disable-ism? Sexism? Age-ism? Bias based on location?
There are a lot of terms that are coded, and everyone knows what they’re talking about. “Recent college grad” means young person OK with not being paid. Are the requirements you are listing? Simply putting the mandatory diversity statement is not enough.
3.) Be honest and reasonable.
Does the job description and compensation reflect the actual duties, expectations and challenges of the position you are hoping to fill?
